What is encAUSTIC?

Encaustic art originated aproximately 100 to 300 AD in Egypt and was used in Fayum mummy portraits. The word encaustic means burned in and the process is exactly that. Beeswax is combined with demar resin and oil paint which is painted on the base in layers that are fused or 'burned' together with fire or heat. This unique painting technique readily lends its self to multi medi and effects that can't be found in any other medium.

Custom Wood Burnt Paddles

Paddle in style with a skookum paddle

Looking for a unique gift for the canoeist in your life or just want to spoil yourself?

You have come to the right place.  I create custom wood burnt paddles. Each paddle is a one of a kind work of art.  I source my paddles from New Brunswick artisans to obtain the best quality and craftsmanship. Each paddle is hand crafted so you can choose the style of paddle and wood that suite you best. Already have a treasured paddle, I can custom burn that as well, you only need to have it shipped to me.

Your paddle is an extension of you and I want the art work to reflect that. I work directly with you to create your personal work of art that will be cherished for generations. When you aren't on the water paddling you can proudly display your paddle with custom leather display hangers that are included free with every purchase. Display hangers come in your choice of black or brown.

Prices start at $400 and up depending on complexity of design and the type of wood selected for the paddle.  Please call, email or message me for a quote.  All orders require a $200 deposit.

I am excited to work with you to create a one-of-a-kind work of art that is as individual and beautiful as the person it is designed for.

Is a paddle a bit too much for you? No problem, I also burn wooden spoons, cutting boards and pretty much anything wooden you can think of.  I currently have a selection of premade wood spoons for sale and as always you can contact me to request a custom creation.

Check out my gallery to see a sample of some spoons and paddles I have already done.

Check out my online shop to purchase custom wooden spoons and more. I think you will agree that they are pretty skookum.

Thank you for your business!

Skookum Paddles evolved as an extension of my creations as a visual artist. In 2016 I received a request to create a custom work of art on a paddle as a Christmas gift. While exploring avenues to translate my art work onto the paddle, I came across wood burning and have been in love with the process of using heat and fire to transform ordinary paddles into works of art. Whether hanging on your wall or cutting through the water your custom paddle will make a statement that is all yours.

About Skookum paddles

about me

I believe that art is a reflection of the many ways the world touches us.  I create from within; drawing on my interpretation of the world around me, and the emotions and feelings that result. I believe that colour, form and texture can create personal experiences that touch the soul. I don't believe in conforming to any one style or technique, to me it's about the process.

I have been creating art for as long as I can remember. As a youth I studied drawing and water colors under New Brunswick artist, Steven Smith. From there I continued to develop my skills as a self-taught oil and acrylic painter. After high school I attended the University of New Brunswick and the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design, majoring in English, Fine Art, metalsmithing, photography and fashion design.  In 2015 I moved to Victoria, BC where I continued my artistic path, adding pyrography to my portfolio and opening my custom pyrography business “Skookum Paddles”. In 2017 I moved back to New Brunswick and had the opportunity to take an encaustic class with Nova Scotia artist Sarah Petite, I instantly fell in love with the medium and have primarily focused on acrylic, encaustic and pyrography for the last 3 years. The exploration of art and self-expression drives my passion. I work in oil, acrylic, charcoal, ink, water color, pyrography, encaustic and mixed media.
