Encaustic Gallery

What is encAUSTIC?

Encaustic art originated aproximately 100 to 300 AD in Egypt and was used in Fayum mummy portraits. The word encaustic means burned in and the process is exactly that. Beeswax is combined with demar resin and oil paint which is painted on the base in layers that are fused or 'burned' together with fire or heat. This unique painting technique readily lends its self to multi medi and effects that can't be found in any other medium.

Skookum Paddles evolved as an extension of my creations as a visual artist. In 2016 I received a request to create a custom work of art on a paddle as a Christmas gift. While exploring avenues to translate my art work onto the paddle, I came across wood burning and have been in love with the process of using heat and fire to transform ordinary paddles into works of art. Whether hanging on your wall or cutting through the water your custom paddle will make a statement that is all yours.

About Skookum paddles

about me

I believe that art is a reflection of the many ways the world touches us.  I create from within; drawing on my interpretation of the world around me, and the emotions and feelings that result. I believe that colour, form and texture can create personal experiences that touch the soul. I don't believe in conforming to any one style or technique, to me it's about the process.

I have been creating art for as long as I can remember. As a youth I studied drawing and water colors under New Brunswick artist, Steven Smith. From there I continued to develop my skills as a self-taught oil and acrylic painter. After high school I attended the University of New Brunswick and the New Brunswick College of Craft and Design, majoring in English, Fine Art, metalsmithing, photography and fashion design.  In 2015 I moved to Victoria, BC where I continued my artistic path, adding pyrography to my portfolio and opening my custom pyrography business “Skookum Paddles”. In 2017 I moved back to New Brunswick and had the opportunity to take an encaustic class with Nova Scotia artist Sarah Petite, I instantly fell in love with the medium and have primarily focused on acrylic, encaustic and pyrography for the last 3 years. The exploration of art and self-expression drives my passion. I work in oil, acrylic, charcoal, ink, water color, pyrography, encaustic and mixed media.
